Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse features a large floriated cross pattée centered within a beaded inner circle, with four small pellets or annulets placed in the angles between the arms of the cross. The circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer'), the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese Crown. Notably, the letters N in 'VINCES' and the initial S are punched in inverted orientation, a recognised die characteristic of this Porto issue. The overall design reflects the devotional iconographic programme standard to João III's tostão coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

João III's monetary reforms of the 1550s consolidated silver coinage under stricter fineness standards, and the Porto mint's output during this window was notably limited before operations there contracted further under Sebastião. The "O-P" mintmark distinguishes Porto-struck pieces from their Lisbon counterparts — a distinction that matters considerably given the relative scarcity of Porto production for this type.

Gomes 142 is among the less frequently encountered attributions in the João III silver series.
