Obverse description Central Portuguese royal shield, crowned above, displaying the traditional quinas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants, surmounted by a royal crown of open arched form. The mint mark 'A' appears to the left of the shield and an azor (goshawk), the heraldic symbol of the Azores, is positioned to the right. The circumferential Latin legend reads ANTONIVS : I : D : G : REX : P : ET ALG, identifying António I as King of Portugal and the Algarves. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular fabric and bold relief typical of hammered silver coinage of the late sixteenth century.
