Dionysopolis, on the western Black Sea coast in what is now Bulgaria, was a Milesian foundation that spent much of the Hellenistic period navigating the pressure of Getae incursions from the interior. The city's bronze coinage from this stretch was purely local in function — facilitating small transactions within a regional economy oriented around grain export and the fishing trade of the Pontic littoral. The broad date range assigned to this type reflects genuine uncertainty rather than a long production run; these bronzes are too poorly documented in controlled excavation contexts to pin more tightly.
