| Obverse description | Degraded bust facing right, rendered in a schematic Anglo-Saxon style derived from late Roman and Byzantine prototypes. The effigy displays a heavily stylised head with rudimentary facial features, surrounded by a beaded or pellet border. The legend SOИ AVᔕ, a debased retrograde rendering of a Roman imperial titulature, runs around the periphery of the flan. The overall die engraving reflects the transitional and increasingly abstract coinage style characteristic of the mid-seventh-century English thrymsa series. The flan is irregular in shape, consistent with hammered production of this period. |
