Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover occupied a peculiar constitutional position in the 1790s: its ruler, George III, was simultaneously King of Great Britain and Ireland, yet the Electorate remained a technically separate entity under the Holy Roman Empire until Napoleon dissolved it in 1806. The .2 variety of KM#391 reflects a minor die revision from the earlier issue, a distinction that matters to specialists working through the Hanoverian thaler series.
These were struck during the Revolutionary Wars, when French campaigns in the Low Countries put Hanover under direct military threat — a pressure that would eventually result in French occupation in 1803.
