August of Sachsen-Weissenfels held the Archbishopric of Magdeburg as an administrator rather than a consecrated bishop — a Protestant arrangement that had been formalized under the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, which assigned Magdeburg to Brandenburg after August's death. By 1675, August was in the final year of his administration, and Brandenburg's absorption of the territory was imminent. The ⅔ Thaler denomination itself reflects the broader currency chaos of the Holy Roman Empire following the Kipper- und Wipperzeit, with fractional Thaler denominations proliferating as regional authorities struggled to maintain viable circulating silver.
