The shield displays the city's heraldic charges in relief, rendered in the late Gothic style characteristic of Alsatian civic coinage. The circumferential Latin legend, separated by cross-pattee stops, reads clockwise from the top and incorporates the date 1556. The coin is struck on a broad flan with a milled or toothed outer border.
