Obverse description Central field occupied by the ornate municipal arms of Thann, depicting a quartered shield surmounted by a decorative mantle or crest, the whole framed within a beaded inner circle. The shield displays the city's heraldic charges in relief, rendered in the late Gothic style characteristic of Alsatian civic coinage. The circumferential Latin legend, separated by cross-pattee stops, reads clockwise from the top and incorporates the date 1556. The coin is struck on a broad flan with a milled or toothed outer border.

Reverse description A large Imperial-style eagle with wings displayed occupies the central field, depicted in high relief with detailed feathering on the spread wings and talons visible at the base; the head is turned to the left. The eagle is contained within a beaded inner circle, with the circumferential Latin legend running clockwise and separated by cross-pattee stops. The design follows the late medieval heraldic tradition common to Alsatian and Upper Rhenish municipal coinage of the mid-sixteenth century.
