Pnytagoras navigated one of the most dangerous political passages in Cypriot history — initially siding with the Persians and later switching allegiance to Alexander the Great during the siege of Tyre in 332 BC, a pivot that secured his survival and the continuation of his dynasty. His coinage spans both loyalties, struck under the shadow of Achaemenid suzerainty before that authority collapsed entirely with Alexander's eastern campaign.
Salamis was the dominant city-kingdom on Cyprus throughout this period, and Pnytagoras was its last independent king before the island was absorbed into the Ptolemaic sphere.
