Archelaus I inherited a kingdom regarded by southern Greeks as semi-barbarous and spent his reign aggressively reorienting it toward Hellenic prestige — moving the royal seat to Pella, restructuring the Macedonian military along more professional lines, and attracting figures including Euripides and Zeuxis to his court.
