| Obverse description | Sphinx seated to the left in profile, rendered in archaic Greek style with broad, flat relief characteristic of early Troas coinage. The creature displays the characteristic leonine body with folded wings raised above the back, and a human head facing left. The flan is irregular and slightly scyphate in form, with the design occupying the full available field. No legend or inscription is present. |

| Additional information |
Gergis was a small Troad settlement whose coinage remains poorly attributed in the literature — some scholars have assigned these pieces to Gergis near the Hellespont, others to a similarly named site, and the debate is not fully resolved. What is consistent is the narrow weight standard, which aligns with the reduced Attic or local Troad fractional series circulating among minor poleis during this century. Tiny regional fractions like this typically served intra-market exchange rather than long-distance trade.
