Trapezus — modern Trabzon on Turkey's Black Sea coast — was a strategically vital port city that Trajan passed through during his preparations for the Parthian campaign. The civic era date encoded in the legend, year 50 (ΕΤΟΥϹ Ν), anchors this issue precisely to 113–114 AD, coinciding directly with Trajan's eastern mobilization. Local bronze issues of this kind were minted under civic authority to meet small-denomination demand that imperial mints had little interest in supplying to provincial markets.
RPC III 2929 is a scarce type; the Recueil general number 4 reflects its early documentation in the corpus of Pontic civic coinage.
