Himera's bronze coinage of this period carries an undercurrent of urgency. The city had survived a catastrophic Carthaginian assault in 480 BC — the same year as Salamis, a coincidence ancient sources found too neat to ignore — but by 409 BC its luck ran out. Hannibal Mago sacked Himera completely, massacring thousands in revenge for his grandfather Hamilcar's defeat there seventy years prior. This tetras belongs to the final decades of that doomed mint, making any surviving example a product of a city already living on borrowed time.
