The god is depicted in a composed, introspective pose consistent with the dynastic Seleucid reverse type derived from Apollo Musagetes iconography. The Greek royal legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟΥ runs along the upper and lower periphery. Two control monograms appear in the outer field: (ΞΥ) to the left and (ΩΡ) to the right, serving as mint or magistrate identifiers for the Antioch on the Orontes issue. |

Seleukos III reigned for barely three years before being poisoned — most likely by members of his own army during a campaign in Asia Minor around 222 BC. His coinage is correspondingly scarce, and Antioch on the Orontes issues from his reign represent a brief window of production before his brother Antiochos III assumed power and dramatically expanded the empire's mint output.
