The hair is elaborately coiffed in thick, flowing locks radiating outward from the crown in a distinctive lion's-mane style, a hallmark of Pontic royal portraiture associating the king with Heracles and Alexander the Great. A royal diadem is tied around the head, its ends visible behind the neck. The portrait fills nearly the entire flan, reflecting the bold, high-relief die-cutting characteristic of the Pergamene mint workshops. No legend appears on the obverse. |
