Tetradrachm In the name of Lysimachus

Byzantion's posthumous tetradrachms in the name of Lysimachus were struck long after the man himself died at Corupedium in 281 BC — part of a widespread civic practice of invoking his image to lend legitimacy and facilitate trade across the Aegean world. By the mid-second century, several cities along the Thracian coast and Propontis were still producing these "Lysimachi" as a trusted commercial currency, their weight standards and iconographic authority making them acceptable across markets that had no interest in local civic types.

The Marinescu corpus remains the standard reference for these Byzantion issues, distinguishing them from the enormous volume of similar posthumous pieces struck at Lampsakos and elsewhere by subtle die and ethnic details.
