These tetradrachms struck at Pella in the decade following Alexander's death in 323 BC occupied a peculiar administrative moment — the empire was nominally intact under the regency of Perdiccas, then Antipater, but the machinery of royal coinage continued grinding forward under the fiction of a living king's authority. Pella, as the Macedonian homeland mint, carried particular weight in that fiction.
