Struck at Amphipolis immediately following Alexander's death in Babylon in June 323 BC, this issue belongs to the earliest posthumous series produced under the authority of Philip III Arrhidaeus and the regency of Perdiccas. Amphipolis was Macedonia's most productive mint during this period, positioned to supply silver from the Pangaion mines directly into coinage. Price 113 is among the first attributed types in the posthumous sequence, placing this piece in the chaotic months when the empire's future was being violently contested among the Diadochi.
