| Beschrijving voorzijde | Youthful bare head of Heracles facing right, his idealized beardless features conveying both heroic vigour and divine serenity, enveloped in the scalp of the Nemean lion whose open jaws crown the head and whose paws are knotted at the throat. The deeply cut high-relief portrait, characteristic of the early Amphipolis series, displays finely rendered curling hair emerging beneath the lion-skin headdress, with the musculature of the neck boldly modelled. The field is otherwise plain, with no legend, the imagery alone asserting the dynastic and divine associations of Alexander III. |
