The finely modeled facial features display idealized Hellenistic artistry characteristic of the early Amphipolis mint issues. The musculature and flowing mane of the lionskin are rendered with considerable detail, and the coin's broad, slightly irregular flan is enclosed within a plain border. |

Struck at Amphipolis shortly after Alexander's death in 323 BC, these issues continued under the authority of his successors during the turbulent regency period — first Perdiccas, then Antipater. Amphipolis was the principal Macedonian mint, and it never stopped producing Alexander-type coinage even as the empire fractured around it. Price 136 falls within a tightly attributed group distinguished by specific control marks that allow scholars to sequence production across these years with unusual precision.
