Struck at Amphipolis in the years immediately following Alexander's death in 323 BC, this issue falls squarely within the turbulent opening phase of the Wars of the Diadochi — the brutal succession conflict among his generals. Amphipolis was the primary mint of the Macedonian kingdom and continued producing coinage in Alexander's name under Antipater's regency, a deliberate political choice to project continuity of Macedonian authority while the empire fractured around it.
Price 139 is identified by its specific control marks, the detail that separates it from the hundreds of other posthumous Alexander tetradrachms struck across the former empire's mints.
