Tetradrachm In the name of Alexander III

Herakleia Pontika began striking Alexander-type tetradrachms late in the series, well after the conquests had ended and the Successor kingdoms were consolidating power. These issues belong to a period when cities across the Black Sea littoral were asserting commercial independence by minting in Alexander's name — a monetary convention that had outlasted the man by over a century.

Price 1173 is attributed to the city's autonomous civic coinage, not to a Successor dynast, which is relatively uncommon among late posthumous Alexander issues from this region.
