Klazomenai's posthumous Alexander tetradrachms were struck roughly a century after the king's death, when the city was navigating the fractious politics of the Seleucid-Ptolemaic rivalry in western Asia Minor. The issue belongs to a broader wave of civic mints asserting de facto autonomy by adopting the Alexander type — a politically neutral coinage with universal commercial acceptance across the Hellenistic world. Klazomenai had long functioned as a naval and commercial node on the Ionian coast, and the tetradrachm facilitated trade on those terms rather than signaling allegiance to any dynast.
Meadows' die study catalogues this issue tightly. The 1743 reference places it within a small, well-defined sequence — not a prolific mint output.
