Smyrna's late Hellenistic civic tetradrachms issued under the authority of named magistrates — stephanephoroi — are among the more precisely attributable provincial silver issues of western Asia Minor. Hermippos, son of Sipylos, served as eponymous magistrate during this decade, his name and patronymic stamped into the coinage as a form of civic accountability. The practice tied individual magistrates to the monetary output of their tenure, which had real consequences: adulterated or underweight issues could be traced back to a specific official.
The Milne, Rhousopoulos, and Weber references all converge on this type without significant die discrepancy, suggesting a relatively contained issue.
