| 裏面の説明 | Lion standing right with left forepaw raised in a pose of alert dignity, a motif emblematic of Smyrna's civic identity. The magistrate's name, identifying Hermippos son of Sipylos, appears in the exergue below the ground line. The entire design is enclosed within a wreath of oak leaves and acorns, a characteristic framing device of Smyrnaean civic tetradrachms of this period. The ethnic legend ΣΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ is prominently displayed, asserting the issuing authority of the city. |

Smyrna's late Hellenistic civic tetradrachms issued under the authority of named magistrates — stephanephoroi — are among the more precisely attributable provincial silver issues of western Asia Minor. Hermippos, son of Sipylos, served as eponymous magistrate during this decade, his name and patronymic stamped into the coinage as a form of civic accountability. The practice tied individual magistrates to the monetary output of their tenure, which had real consequences: adulterated or underweight issues could be traced back to a specific official.
The Milne, Rhousopoulos, and Weber references all converge on this type without significant die discrepancy, suggesting a relatively contained issue.
