The portrait displays the refined, idealized modeling characteristic of late Hellenistic Athenian coinage. |

This piece belongs to the New Style coinage introduced at Athens around 164 BC, a reform that replaced the archaic "owl" coinage with a more elaborate monthly magistrate system. Three magistrates — here Dorotheos, Diophanes (or similar), and Diokleides — were appointed to oversee each issue, their names stamped on the reverse as a form of civic accountability. The specific combination of names allows precise dating within the series, which is how Thompson's 1961 die study remains the definitive reference for sequencing these issues.
