Additional information

Demetrius I earned the epithet "Poliorcetes" — the Besieger — largely from his assault on Rhodes between 307 and 304 BC, during which he deployed unprecedented siege machinery including the nine-story Helepolis tower. By the time this Amphipolis issue was struck, he had seized the Macedonian throne from Pyrrhus and Lysimachus's ally Antipater, ruling a kingdom perpetually destabilized by the Wars of the Diadochi. His reign ended in 288 BC when a coordinated invasion by Pyrrhus and Lysimachus collapsed his support; he surrendered to Seleucus I and died a prisoner in 283 BC.
