Obverse description Diademed head of Demetrius I Poliorcetes facing right, rendered in fine Hellenistic style with idealized, youthful features and a prominent bull's horn rising from the diadem above the forehead — an attribute associating the king with Poseidon and divine power. The hair is elaborately worked in thick, flowing waves swept back from the face, with individual locks finely engraved. The portrait is set within a plain inner field, surrounded by a beaded border near the coin's edge. The modelling is of exceptional quality, characteristic of the accomplished die-cutters active at the Amphipolis mint in the early third century BC.
