Demetrios I Poliorketes seized Macedonia in 294 BC by murdering Alexander V, one of the sons of Kassandros, and this issue belongs to that brief, turbulent occupation of the Macedonian throne. His reign lasted barely five years before Pyrrhos of Epeiros and Lysimachos combined to drive him out in 288 BC. The Pella mint was the symbolic heart of Macedonian royal authority, and striking there was as much a political act as an economic one.
