| Obverse description | Nike in three-quarter profile alights upon the prow of a war galley facing left, her wings fully spread. The goddess blows a long salpinx (trumpet) held in her right hand while her left hand grasps a stylis (steering oar), emblematic of naval victory. The figure is rendered in dynamic Hellenistic style, with flowing drapery suggesting motion, the galley prow beneath her feet shown in profile with characteristic apotropaic eye detail. The composition celebrates Demetrios Poliorketes' celebrated naval triumph at the Battle of Salamis (306 BC). |
