Characene was a semi-autonomous kingdom occupying the marshy delta region where the Tigris and Euphrates met the Persian Gulf — a critical node for maritime trade between the Parthian empire and the Indian subcontinent. Attambelos II ruled during the height of this commercial importance, and his bronze tetradrachms were almost certainly a practical coinage tied to port commerce rather than political display.
The kingdom's relationship with Parthia during this reign was one of careful vassalage; Characene kings minted in their own name but consistently deferred to Parthian overlordship when pressured. BMC Greek 5 is the primary reference point, with surviving specimens concentrated in a narrow find-spot range along the lower Mesopotamian waterways.
