Antiochos VIII earned the nickname Gryphos — "Hook-nose" — from contemporaries, a rare case of an ancient epithet that was plainly physical rather than honorific. His reign was consumed by civil war against his half-brother Antiochos IX Kyzikenos, and the Antioch mint changed hands more than once during the conflict.
