The curling hair of Heracles is visible beneath the headdress, and the idealized facial features — strong brow, almond-shaped eye, and full lips — reflect the portrait conventions of the Lysippan school, traditionally associated with Alexander the Great himself. In his extended right hand he holds an eagle facing right, while his left hand grasps a tall sceptre. The Greek legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ runs along the right field, identifying the coin as that of Alexander. A bull's head facing right serves as a mint control symbol in the left field, a diagnostic feature of the Sardis mint issues catalogued under Price 2540. The composition is rendered in the confident, energetic style characteristic of early Macedonian royal coinage. |
