背面描述 A quadripartite incuse square divided into four triangular sections by a cruciform pattern, each quadrant sunk deeply into the flan in the typical archaic incuse technique. The recessed compartments alternate between raised and depressed triangular fields, creating a windmill or pinwheel effect characteristic of early northern Greek coinage. The rough, granular surface of the flan is visible throughout the field, consistent with the hammered production method of the late archaic period.

附加信息

Mende, a Chalcidian colony on the western prong of the Thessalian peninsula, was producing wine significant enough to export across the Mediterranean basin by the early fifth century. These tetradrachms circulated alongside that trade, and their production predates the Persian Wars — meaning examples struck at the early end of this range were already in use when Xerxes marched through the northern Aegean in 480 BC, likely passing within miles of the mint itself.

The Noe sequence for Mende remains incompletely resolved; the dash in the Noe reference here indicates an unlisted or unnumbered specimen, placing this piece outside the core classified dies.
