| Obverse description | A biga (two-horse chariot) depicted in left-facing motion, driven by a charioteer rendered in archaic style, seated and holding a kentron (goad) and reins taut over the two horses shown in vigorous stride. The wheel of the chariot, with clearly articulated spokes, is visible in the lower left field. In the exergue below the ground line, a large olive leaf is depicted in relief, a civic symbol associated with Messana. The scene is enclosed within a beaded border, characteristic of early Sicilian coinage of the period. |

| Reverse description | A hare shown in full gallop to the right, rendered with naturalistic energy in the archaic Sicilian style, occupying the central field. The ethnic legend ΜΕƧƧΕΝΙΟΝ is arranged around the hare in four segments, reading between the limbs and body of the animal. The border consists of a continuous row of beads. The composition reflects the distinctive early coinage of Messana, where the hare served as a civic emblem of the city. |
