Tetradrachm

Leontini, a Chalcidian colony on the eastern coast of Sicily, produced tetradrachms in direct competition with neighboring Syracuse during the fifth century BC — a rivalry that was political as much as commercial. The city briefly sheltered Athenian diplomatic ambitions in Sicily before the catastrophic 415 BC expedition, and its coinage circulated within that same contested network of alliances and grain trade.

The HGC variety designation here is worth noting: minor die variations within this type are well documented, and matching a specific specimen to a catalogued obverse die can place it within a narrow production window of the Leontinian mint's active decades.
