| Beschrijving keerzijde | Facing left, the head of the freshwater nymph Arethousa is rendered in high relief with fine detail, wearing a hoop earring and a pearl necklace; her hair is elaborately dressed and bound. The ethnic legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΣ arcs above the portrait. Beneath the chin, the engraver's signature ΕΥΚΛ/ΕΙΔΑ is inscribed in two lines on a tablet (diptych), identifying the die-cutter as Eukleidas. Four dolphins swim in a circular arrangement around the portrait, a hallmark motif of Syracusan coinage, their arrangement framing the design in the field. |
