| Ön yüz açıklaması | Quadriga driven at full gallop to the left by a winged Nike, who holds the reins and a kentron; above the horses, a bunch of grapes hangs from a vine tendril in the upper field, referencing the agricultural wealth of Akragas. Nike is rendered in fine archaic-to-classical transitional style with detailed drapery and spread wings. Below the exergual line, the ethnic legend ΑΚΡΑΓΑΝΤΙΝΟΝ is inscribed in two lines. The entire composition is executed with exceptional artistic virtuosity characteristic of the great Sicilian die engravers of the late fifth century BC. |

These tetradrachms were struck in the last years before Akragas was sacked and burned by the Carthaginian general Hannibal Mago in 406 BC — one of the most thorough destructions of a Greek city in the western Mediterranean. The city was not meaningfully repopulated for decades. Coins from this terminal phase of Akragantine independence are among the finest produced anywhere in the Greek world, issued at a moment when the city's wealth from the olive and sulphur trades was still intact.
The very brief production window, ending abruptly with the Carthaginian assault, accounts for the relative scarcity of surviving specimens in collectible condition.
