| Obverse description | Quadriga driven at full gallop to the left by a winged Nike, who holds the reins and a kentron; above the horses, a bunch of grapes hangs from a vine tendril in the upper field, referencing the agricultural wealth of Akragas. Nike is rendered in fine archaic-to-classical transitional style with detailed drapery and spread wings. Below the exergual line, the ethnic legend ΑΚΡΑΓΑΝΤΙΝΟΝ is inscribed in two lines. The entire composition is executed with exceptional artistic virtuosity characteristic of the great Sicilian die engravers of the late fifth century BC. |
