Amisos held a complicated position during Mithridates VI's long war with Rome — officially a free city, it was deeply integrated into his economic and military apparatus. These bronzes were struck to fund a kingdom perpetually mobilizing: six wars in four decades, three of them directly against Rome. When Lucullus sacked Amisos in 71 BC, the mint was effectively disrupted, making issues from the later portion of this date range considerably scarcer than the broad span implies.
