The Achaean League's bronze coinage served the federation's internal economy during a period of increasingly tense negotiation with Rome — a relationship that ended in 146 BC when Lucius Mummius sacked Corinth, dissolved the League entirely, and absorbed Greece into the Roman provincial system. Coins of this type ceased production at that moment, not gradually.
The Alea designation refers to the specific fractional denomination within the League's bronze series, a system that standardized exchange across member poleis from Sicyon to Patras.
