Pharsalos was the dominant polis of Thessaly through much of the fifth and fourth centuries, its aristocratic families — particularly the Skopadai — maintaining influence through cavalry wealth and political maneuvering between Athens, Sparta, and eventually Macedon. Bronze fractional coinage of this type circulated locally during a period when the city repeatedly found itself at the center of interstate conflicts, including Jason of Pherai's forcible consolidation of Thessalian power in the 370s. The Rogers variant designation suggests a die combination not fully catalogued in the main sequence.
