Homolion was a small Thessalian city on the lower Peneios River near the Macedonian border — precisely the kind of community that issued bronze coinage not for trade ambition but from civic necessity, to manage local exchange when silver was unavailable or impractical. Its political situation throughout the fourth century was complicated by the dominance of the Thessalian League and periodic Macedonian pressure from the north. Philip II's consolidation of Thessaly after 352 BC almost certainly affected when and whether cities like Homolion could mint independently.
The BCD Thessaly collection, from which lot 1064 derives, remains the most authoritative single assemblage of regional bronzes, and Rogers 257 is one of the few systematic attempts to catalogue Homolion's civic issues.
