This emblematic device of Zeus, patron deity of Olympia, is rendered in a schematic yet forceful manner consistent with the archaic die-cutting tradition of Elis. The incuse square forms a natural frame around the design, and no additional border or inscription accompanies the type. The retrograde digamma letters flanking the device identify the issuing authority of the sanctuary at Olympia. |
