Leopold I had spent his first decade as duke effectively in exile — French forces occupied Lorraine from 1670, and he was only restored to his duchy in 1698 following the Treaty of Ryswick. The teston series of 1704–05 was struck during the opening years of the War of the Spanish Succession, a conflict that would again threaten Lorraine's fragile autonomy. Leopold walked an extraordinarily narrow diplomatic path, nominally allied with the Empire while avoiding direct military entanglement that might invite French reoccupation.
