The date 1552 appears in the upper field within the circular legend, and the mint mark S (for Troyes) is placed at the base of the shield. The circumferential Latin legend, separated by crosses and dots, reads XPS VINCIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPE, invoking the Christological formula asserting Christ's victory, reign, and dominion. The milled border is sharply defined, consistent with the machine-struck production of this issue. |
