| Beschrijving voorzijde | Bare-headed, armored bust of Charles IX facing right, wearing a cuirass with decorative gorget and pauldron rendered in fine engraved detail. The youthful royal effigy is depicted in profile with naturalistic facial features characteristic of French Renaissance portraiture. A laurel wreath adorns the king's head. The circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading CAROLVS VIIII D G FRANC REX, identifying the king as Charles IX, by the Grace of God, King of France. | Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device consisting of the crowned royal arms of France — a shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis arranged two over one — flanked by two interlaced letter C monograms, each surmounted by a small crown, forming the royal cipher of Charles IX. The shield is topped by a large ornate royal crown. The date in Roman numerals appears in the legend, which reads SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDICTUM, a devotional phrase meaning 'Blessed be the name of the Lord.' The overall composition is bold and well-centered, typical of mid-sixteenth-century French hammered silver coinage. |
