Suleiman I assumed the throne in September 1520, and the Damascus mint — one of the most productive in the early Ottoman monetary system — would have begun striking in his name almost immediately upon receipt of the accession order. The Damascus sultani carries particular historical weight for this reign: Suleiman's father Selim I had seized Syria from the Mamluks just four years earlier in 1516, making these early Damascus strikes among the first full generation of Ottoman coinage from a mint that had only recently been absorbed into the empire.
