The legend proclaims the sultan's glory and divine favour, reading 'Gold striker, the glorious and victorious, in the land and sea.' The script fills the entire flan with bold, interlocking letterforms characteristic of Ottoman sultani reverses of this period. No figurative imagery is present, in keeping with Islamic numismatic convention. The irregular flan edges are typical of hand-struck Ottoman gold coinage of the early seventeenth century. |
