| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field displays a rampant lion passant guardant facing right, rendered in bold medieval relief characteristic of Mosan die-cutting of the late 13th century. The lion, symbol of the County of Hainaut associated with John of Flanders, is depicted with curling tail and stylized mane. The figure is enclosed within a plain inner circle, itself surrounded by a beaded border. The peripheral legend in uncial Latin characters reads IOhANNeS ePC (Johannes Episcopus, meaning John Bishop), interrupted by cross stops. The flan is irregular in shape, typical of hammered coinage of the period. |
